Tight shoes can ruin your plans, but there's a solid way to fix them at home. You can stretch most footwear with everyday items, though some methods suit specific materials better than others. Pick the right technique for your pair to get a better fit without damage. Some tricks are great for leather, while others work best on synthetics.

What you need

  • Ziplock bags
  • Water
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Thick socks
  • Hairdryer
  • Shoe stretcher
  • Mink oil
  • Vaseline
  • Soapy water

Steps

  1. Insert water-filled ziplock bags into shoes and freeze overnight. This is a hit for uniform stretching. Let the ice thaw until it can be removed.
  2. Spray rubbing alcohol inside shoes and wear them until dry. The alcohol softens the material. You can also use socks soaked in alcohol for the same effect.
  3. Put on thick socks and use a hairdryer on tight areas. Flex your feet while heating to soften and stretch the leather. This works in just a few minutes per session.
  4. Insert a shoe stretcher and adjust it gradually. Leave it overnight for mechanical expansion. People who do this say wood stretchers are better than plastic.
  5. Wear shoes around the house with thick socks and a stretching spray. Daily wear gradually stretches leather over several hours.
  6. Soak leather shoes in soapy water and wear them as they dry. Apply Vaseline and heat with a hairdryer to soften the leather further.

Why it works

Expansion and Softening

Water expands as it freezes, pushing material outward evenly. Rubbing alcohol makes leather pliable. Heat softens leather so movement can stretch it. Shoe stretchers apply steady pressure for uniform expansion. Water and Vaseline condition and soften leather.

Material and Tool Tips

The freezer method works best on non-leather shoes. Always use medium heat with a hairdryer to avoid drying out the leather. If using a stretcher, choose wood over plastic for better results. To reduce friction, try wearing thinner socks. When in doubt, call a professional.
