Reattach a Separated Shoe Sole
Glue a loose sole back on using adhesive and pressure. Follow your specific glue's instructions closely for best results.
What you need
- Cleaning wipe or cloth
- Acetone or rubbing alcohol mixed with water
- Shoe adhesive
- Clamps, tape, string, or heavy weight

Steps
- Use a wipe, cloth with acetone, or a water and rubbing alcohol mix to scrub the sole bottom, top edge, and the shoe back where the separation occurred. Remove dirt and old glue. Ensure both parts are completely dry.
- Put glue on the sole and shoe base. Follow the curing time and application notes on your adhesive product.
- Push the sole firmly back to its original position. Hold the shoe together for 30 seconds. Then bind it tight using clamps, rope, duct tape, rubber bands, or a heavy weight to maintain pressure.
- Leave the shoe secured and let the adhesive dry for 24 hours. Waiting the 24 hours gives the glue time to cure fully.
Why it works
Cleaning
Removes dirt and oil so the bond takes hold.
Adhesive
Creates a durable connection between the sole and shoe.

Pressure
Keeps parts aligned during the cure.
Drying
Allows the glue to harden for a lasting fix.

If it goes wrong
Mixed guidance
Sources vary on drying time and adhesive amount. Page 1 mentions no drying time, while Pages 2 and 3 require 24 hours. Adhesive application ranges from a thin bead to a thick layer. When details conflict, check the label on your glue and prioritize the longer drying time to ensure the repair holds.
