How to Reattach a Separated Shoe Sole
Fix a lifting sole by cleaning the surfaces, applying a flexible adhesive, and holding the bond while the glue cures fully for a lasting repair.
What you need
- Cleaning wipe
- Strong, flexible adhesive or Flex Glue
- Rag
- Clamp or weighted object

Steps
- Inspect the shoe and pull the separated sole away from the bottom. Clean the shoe bottom and the top of the sole with a cleaning wipe. Removing dirt and debris is essential.
- Place a rag inside the shoe to help maintain its shape while you work.
- Apply a thin bead of flexible adhesive along the top edge and across the interior surface of the sole. Spread the glue evenly.
- Push the sole back to its original position. Press firmly and hold the bond for 20 to 30 seconds.
- Secure the shoe with a clamp or weighted object. Allow the glue to dry for 24 to 48 hours.
Why it works
Bonding and durability
Cleaning the surfaces ensures a strong bond and stops dirt from interfering with the glue. People who do this repair say choosing a strong, flexible adhesive improves durability. Flex Glue is known for holding well with minimal prep.

Hold time vs. curing
A 30-second hold activates the glue's instant grab, but this is insufficient for a strong bond. The hold just starts the process; a full cure of 24 to 48 hours is necessary for a repair that lasts.

If it goes wrong
Bond feels weak
If the sole lifts again, the glue likely didn't cure long enough. Holding it for just a few seconds won't do the job; the adhesive needs the full 24 to 48 hours to set. Also check that surfaces were clean before gluing, as residue can break the bond.
